The Nicaraguan Association of Cinematography was constitutionalized in March 1988 by group of filmmakers. It is made up of Nicaraguan filmmakers and videomakers who share the following principal objectives: Encourage the development and creation of a national cinema in all its forms through research and cultural studies, training and technical certification of its associates
- Promote research and diffusion of a National cinema, inside as well as outside the country.
- Promote, create and participate in film production projects that advance the development and certification of its associates.
- Establish relationships with syndicates, associations and national and international organizations related to film.
- Protect, encourage, support and push for the maintenance and conservation of the National Cinema patrimony, creating awareness amongst the associates of the value of national pride.
ANCI is the only national organization that supports in a sustainable manner, film and audiovisual works in relation to the financing of film and video productions. It promotes the diffusion of the works of its members and offers training to technicians and artists in the audiovisual field as well as serves as national representative for the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de Los Baños in Cuba.
ANCI has recently developed a proposal for a Law to Develop Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts, which is currently under discussion with the cultural authorities of the country. This project will guarantee creators of the audiovisual arts a solid legal backing that will permit them to count on true development and promotion of this artisitic activity.

CINERGIA
Fund for Audiovisual Development in Central America and Cuba
www.cinergia.org
CINERGIA was created less than one year ago as a project to create funds that would assist audiovisual production in Central America.
CINERGIA is a play on the words “cine” (film) – with the understanding that “cine” (film) encompasses everything that today corresponds with images in movement – and the etymology of the word “synergy” comes from the word “cooperation” which evokes the idea that a combination of forces or union can give far superior results than those possible through individual efforts. So why not unite, in a manner of solidarity, diverse energies in order to give that extra push to Central American audiovisual. This is exactly what CINERGIA does. And as to cooperation and solidarity, there is more than enough.
CINERGIA took shape under the administration of the Costa Rican Center of Cinematographic Production of the Ministry of Culture, with financial support from HIVOS of Holland, the Ford Foundation and the Veritas University. Since then, others institutions such as The Foundation of New Latin American Cinema of Cuba, the Embassy of France in Costa Rica, the program ‘Cine en Construcción (Film in the Making) of the San Sebastian Festival and the Latin American Cinema meetings in Toulouse have joined the efforts of these initial founders. The Nicaraguan writer, Sergio Ramirez, the Argentinian filmmaker, Eliseo Subielo, the Spanish scriptwriter and narrator, Fernando Marías, the Italian-Brazilian producer, Donald Ranvaud and the Cuban producer, Alquimia Pe ña are just a few of the friends who have been enthused by this new adventure, not to mention the filmmakers of the region who have not only imparted words of advice and wisdom, but also participated abundantly with 77 projects in the first convocation, a number well above our expectations which has only served to bolster our enthusiasm.
We united a willing and able jury who not only evaluated each and every one of the proposals, but who also adopted a project as their own, ensuring the credibility and future of this first fund for the support of the audiovisual in Central America and Cuba. The quality, and the desire to see the growth and professionalism of a new cinema coupled with the synergy of the region has resulted in the stimulation of 23 diverse projects in the areas of training, project development, production and post-production.
The festivals of Rotterdam in Holland, Nates, Biarritz and Toulouse in Frace, Havana in Cuba and San Sebastian in Spain have also opened their doors to us. However, the quality and quantity of the proposals have comprised us to knock on more doors and continue….continue, not only in direct support of the projects, but in the development of training, in increasing the visibility of images of the region and in the creation of synergy between all the countries and their filmmakers who make up the wide spectrum that is the Central American audiovisual.

ESCUELA INTERNACIONAL DE CINE Y TELEVISION
(International Film and Television School)
San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba
http://www.eictv.org
The Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television (International School of Film and Television), created by the New Latin American Cinema Foundation was inaugurated in 1986 in San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba and has been presided over, since its inception, by the Colombian writer, Gabriel García Márquez.
The EICTV is the most important academic project of the Foundation of the New Latin American Cinema (FNCL). Its first director was Fernando Birri, the prestigious Argentinian director, founder of the New Latin American Cinema movement and in a visionary of the project. Conceived as a school of artistic training, the EICTV practices the specific philosophy of inviting active filmmakers capable of imparting real knowledge through their experiences as opposed to using professional teachers. In its more than 18 years of existence the EICTV has graduated over 400 students from almost 50 countries. The current Director General is Cuban producer, Julio García Espinosa.
The Regular course at the EICTV is a three-year program open to applicants who have completed at least two years of university studies. Future filmmakers are trained in Directing, Producing, Editing, Photography, Sound, Screenwriting and Documentary. In the first year, all students undergo general film production courses ending with a 3-minute exercise on 16mm as well as television. In the second year the entire group studies documentary filmmaking before starting on their specializations. The course ends with each student completing two exercises in fiction and documentary on film and video. These are called pre-theses. The fiction exercise is a 10-minute video; the documentary, 13 minutes. The final exercises for the thesis are a 10-minute short fiction on 35 mm, and a 26-minute documentary on video.
Over the years, EICTV students have produced more than 3000 short fiction films and documentaries as part of their curriculum in a variety of styles and perspectives that reflect their talent, interests and aspirations. These films also provide an interesting view of Cuban politics, people and culture of the day. Guests from around the world, many of them prestigious filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ettore Scola, Peter Greenaway, Gabriel García Marquez, Constantin Costa Gravas and Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, to name a few – have given lectures and conducted workshops that have been recorded and form part of EICTV’s valuable archive.
